Sunset at the Kansas Statehouse

Welcome to downtown Topeka Kansas!

After my friends and I had dinner at a really bomb Mexican Restaurant (I had fajitas) I was uncomfortably full so I decided to take the short drive downtown to walk around. I had never been up close to capitol building before so I made my way over yonder. It was a beautiful evening after a day of storms, and a tornado that came within a couple miles of where I was staying.

This magnificent building, that took 37 years to build, stands proud over the city and can be seen for miles. At 304 feet the dome stands sixteen feet taller than the dome of the US State Capitol Building, and is the second tallest capitol buildings in the United States.

Sitting atop the dome is a statue titled “Ad Astra” sculpted by Richard Bergen and represents a Kaw warrior pointing and arrow towards the North Star. The states motto is “Ad astra per aspera” which means “to the stars through difficulty” and is what gives the statue its name.

The dome is currently brown, but over the next couple decades will tarnish and turn green similar to the statue of liberty.

Something that I didn’t do but want to next time I go to Kansas is to take the 296 steps up to the top of the dome to see all of Kansas’ flatness first hand from the tallest point in Topeka. Free tours are available during opening hours, and more info can be found online!

I’m happy how this picture turned out, and I was able to show this cool building in all its glory. If you would like to purchase a print of this photo click HERE!

Peace and Blessings,

Lucas Jensen
